Apple and Apple Juice Benefits : help Improving Memory Loss

Research Shows Benefits Of Apple Juice On Neurotransmitter Affecting Memory


ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2006) — For those who think that apple juice is a kid's drink, think again. Apples and apple juice may be among the best foods that baby boomers and senior citizens could add to their diet, according to new research that demonstrates how apple products can help boost brain function similar to medication.


Animal research from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) indicates that apple juice consumption may actually increase the production in the brain of the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine, resulting in improved memory. Neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine are chemicals released from nerve cells that transmit messages to other nerve cells. Such communication between nerve cells is vital for good health, not just in the brain, but throughout the body.

"We anticipate that the day may come when foods like apples, apple juice and other apple products are recommended along with the most popular Alzheimer's medications," says Thomas Shea, Ph.D., director of the UML Center for Cellular Neurobiology and Neurodegeneration Research.

The study will be published in the August issue of the international Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. The abstract is now available online at http://www.j-alz.com/issues/9/vol9-3.html

The role of acetylcholine in the brain is not a new area of research. Alzheimer's medication studies start with the premise that increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the brain can help to slow mental decline in people with Alzheimer's disease. Testing a similar hypothesis, the UML research team found that having animals consume antioxidant-rich apple juice had a comparable and beneficial effect.

In this novel animal study at UML, adult (9-12 months) and old (2-2.5 years) mice, some specially bred to develop Alzheimer's-like symptoms, were fed three different diets (a standard diet, a nutrient-deficient diet, and a nutrient-deficient diet supplemented with apple components (in this case, apple juice concentrate was added to their drinking water).

Among those fed the apple juice-supplemented diet, the mice showed an increased production of acetylcholine in their brains. Also, after multiple assessments of memory and learning using traditional Y maze tests, researchers found that the mice who consumed the apple juice-supplemented diets performed significantly better on the maze tests.

"It was surprising how the animals on the apple-enhanced diets actually did a superior job on the maze tests than those not on the supplemented diet," remarks Dr. Shea.

Earlier studies by Shea's research team had strongly suggested apples must possess a unique mix of antioxidants that improve cognition and memory via inhibition of oxidation in the brain. Those results encouraged Shea to evaluate the neurotransmitter effect, as is done in the current study. Medications given to humans with Alzheimer's disease have been shown to inhibit the production of specific enyzmes (cholinesterase inhibitors) that break down acetylcholine in the brain. The end result in the animal study is similar -- there are more of these critical messengers remaining in the brain to enhance memory.

The results obtained were from the animals consuming moderate amounts of apple juice --comparable to drinking approximately two 8 oz. glasses of apple juice or eating 2-3 apples a day. The findings also suggest that the apple-supplemented diet was most helpful in the framework of an overall healthy diet.

Shea concludes, "The findings of the present study show that consumption of antioxidant-rich foods such as apples and apple juice can help reduce problems associated with memory loss."



Shea also notes that a human clinical study evaluating consumption of apple products will begin in the near future.

Cabbage Juice has been proven effective for Ulcer recovery, as well as improve cardiovascular system. Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable . Cabbage is often boiled or fried, but it is more nutritious if serve raw.
I first heard about Cabbage Juice when my husband was suffered from Kidney Stone, and Cabbage Juice was recommended as a natural remedy. When this happens, the body is severely limited in its ability to absorb necessary nutrients from foods eaten. Juicing will encourage and improve this absorption; and juicing is a very easy way to accomplish this.

Vegetable juicing is preferable over fruit juicing because fruit juice often increases insulin levels. Carrot and beet juices are an exception to this, however, because these vegetables juice similarly to fruit juices.

Another advantage of vegetable juicing is that by juicing the vegetables instead of eating them normally, one can consume many more vegetables than would ordinarily be possible. It is possible to consume one pound of raw vegetables per fifty pounds of body weight when consumed by juicing.

Tips for Optimal Juicing:

- Mix the pulp back into the juice because it is very high in fiber. This fiber will help with elimination and helps promote beneficial bacteria levels within the colon.

- The best juice is fresh juice. The ideal situation is to drink vegetable juice immediately after juicing. If carefully stored, however, vegetable juice can be stored for up to 24 hours with only a moderate nutritional loss.

- To store vegetable juice, pour into a clean, glass jar (opaque if possible) and cover with an airtight lid. Avoid as much airspace as possible in the container because oxygen will oxidize the juice and diminish the nutritional content.

- When consuming stored vegetable juice, allow it to sit at room temperature for approximately 30 minutes prior to drinking.

Many people object to the taste of vegetable juicing. Often adding a few green grapes or an apple to a dark green, leafy vegetable juice can make it much more palatable.

Another important key to a successful juicing program is to rotate the vegetables juiced. Do not juice and consume the same vegetables day after day because often this will create food sensitivities and even allergies to these vegetables.

It is also very important to clean the juicer carefully after each use. If this is not done adequately, mold can begin to develop and will contaminate the juice. Swirling around a few drops of bleach in warm water after each use will prevent mold from developing.

Vegetable juice is devoid of both fat and protein. For this reason, it is beneficial to add essential oils and some protein supplement when juicing to make the juiced meal more balanced.

Eating habits change due to the change pace of daily life, people go for fast convenient food, we are driven further and further from the natural eating, we go for quick fixes, we fix symptoms and ignore causes. Facts are facts, many sicknesses are caused by we may be rich but we are under-nourished, we are well-fed but our body cells are crying for balance nutrition for renewing, repairing and proper metabolism, juicing is one of the best ways that we can get ourselves back to the fresh, natural and wholesome supply of nutritions to our body.....

JW Basic Steps on Energy Juicing :

Serving 1~2 person

1. Put Nutrients into the Juicer:  Nutrilite Daily = 2; B Complex = 2; Bio C = 2; Lecithin E = 2; Cal Mgm = 2

2. Add fruits of your choice, 2 cups

3. Add water or low-fat milk, about 300ml

4. On the Juice, blend well

5. Then add Ice Cubes (optional), preferably go without ice as a healthier preference,

6. Add Nutrilite protein powder, 2 scoop

7. Add water or low-fat milk, about 70% full

8. On the Juicer again, blend well

9. Ready to serve and enjoy Your Energy Juice
